Center for Neuroeconomic Studies

Overview

The DIBS Center for Neuroeconomic Studies (CNS) catalyzes research and educational activities across disciplines: neuroscience, behavioral economics, decision sciences, and cognitive and social psychology. Our faculty and student affiliates conduct interdisciplinary research that brings economic theory into the study of the brain and incorporates findings from neuroscience into economic modeling. We are a research center within the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences (DIBS), and our affiliates contribute to the DIBS Colloquia, Workshops, and training programs.

Since its founding in 2005, CNS has grown into one of the leading sites for neuroeconomic research. Studies and reviews by its faculty and students have been published in top journals (including Science, Nature Neuroscience, Neuron, and PLOS: Biology), and its interdisciplinary research has been supported by NIMH, NIA, NIDA, and other funding agencies. Our Major Speaker Series brings 4-5 leading experts to campus annually for a lecture and interactions with our faculty and students. Our biweekly journal club, summer workshops, and annual retreat provide opportunities for students to interact with faculty (and each other) in informal intellectual settings. And, first-year undergraduate students in the Exploring the Mind FOCUS program can take a course in Neuroeconomics: Decision Making and the Brain (Neurobiology 95S) that serves as one of the gateways to the new major in Neuroscience.
